Creating urban spaces
Looking at the shipping containers purpose, you might seem limited, but if you see the bigger picture , they can be sued anywhere as a building material. Cheap, safe and easy to shape. Containers have become the hot new material for all kinds of commercial spaces.
A pop-up market made out of shipping container was built in Chicago, and has shop spaces for lease to local artists, businesses and craftspeople. The light weight of the shipping containers and the ease that they can be shaped and modified, makes them the most versatile building material when it comes about fast building and deploying a construction site.
The market, called Box Shops by Related, has a temporary use for the site where Related plans to build a 58-story tower with 370 apartments and 165 hotel rooms. That proposed project would include the Midwest’s first Equinox Hotel, a concept that combines hospitality with a large health club and fitness classes.
Box Shops includes six container shops of 160 square feet each and one 320-square-foot shop, as well as a 40-foot-long container tipped vertically that creates signage for the market, being visible from the expressway and nearby restaurants and businesses.
19 containers form a building that was put together in just 3 days, Asheville NC, we have the Smoky Park Supper Club, that is the largest Shipping Container building. Even if the building in at the country side, we can always take an example and build it in the city. Based on its location alongside a river, visitors can reach the restaurant by car, foot, bicycle, or boat, adding a bit more potential to the sustainability of the establishment. The project boasts energy savings upwards of 142,500 kWh of energy based on energy saved from having to melt down the containers after their original use.
A mini-mall built in Wichita KS, called Revolutsia, is made out of shipping containers and other repurposed materials. It has a big entrance, food court, design studios and more facilities. It has a old cottage build on the same property making a transition from the old mid-western influence to the new urban development.
Another 12 unit building of office spaces and studios, was built in Providence RI. Called The Box Office, if offers spaces for start-ups, designers, artists and non profit organisations. The building is energy-efficient and sports attractive, with a modern and colorful design that makes it stand out from the surrounding buildings.
These buildings have one thing in common, a different perspective of viewing the future of building and repurposing things and of course Shipping Containers.
