Hyundai Heavy introduces AI-powered ship operating system

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has introduced a new ship operating system which it claims could save fuel costs by over 10 percent.

HHI said it has applied artificial intelligence and its own Hyundai Intelligent Equipment Management Solution to enhance its independent Hi-Touch Marine and Stationery Engine.

According to HHI, AI and HiEMS collect and analyze the big data and real-time information of a vessel’s engine, and make adjustments to the ship power control management system to optimize fuel efficiency.

Additionally, HHI is looking to expand its smart engine business by providing remote monitoring and preventive diagnosis services from its digital control center in Busan.

“In line with the era of the digital transformation, Hyundai Heavy Industries will continue to maintain its technological advantage to overcome the strong competition from China and Japan’s shipbuilding industry through the development of smart ships using advanced technologies,” HHI said in a release.

Since HHI introduced its HiEMS in 2018, it has obtained deals for 45 vessels (170 engines).
