In the Czech town of Litomyšl, known for its UNESCO-listed castle and vibrant architecture, a new landmark invites visitors to see the landscape from a fresh perspective. Designed by Atelier-r, the Lookout Above Litomyšl turns used shipping containers into a striking steel tower that blends creativity with sustainability.
A Tower Rooted in Local Vision
The project was part of the town’s “Destinations of Journeys” initiative—a program encouraging residents and hikers to explore nature and discover new views of their surroundings. The northwest edge of town offered the perfect spot, where the sun sets over red rooftops and the countryside beyond. The city asked for something affordable, environmentally conscious, and reversible, meaning it could be removed without disturbing the landscape.
Turning Shipping Containers into Architecture
Atelier-r’s solution used two used shipping containers. One serves as the entrance, while inside the second container, a steel staircase winds upward, ending in an observation deck. The grated metal steps and landings let in light and air, creating an open feeling despite the industrial materials.
Sustainable by Design
The architects saw shipping containers as the perfect symbol of modern global life—objects that travel the world but can also be reused in creative, eco-friendly ways.
To maintain authenticity, the containers’ original finish was left untouched. No new paint or polish was added, only protective coatings on the new metal parts. The result feels raw, honest, and durable—an object that belongs to both the industrial and natural worlds.
The tower’s rugged steel contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greenery and the ornate skyline of Litomyšl. From the top, visitors can take in panoramic views of the historic town, its castle complex, and the rolling Czech countryside.
