How to use

Installing Your Shipping Container Roll Up Door

  • What You’ll Need:

Measuring tape & marker – to mark the opening accurately
Cutting tool (angle grinder, plasma cutter, or cutting torch) – to cut through the container wall
Frame material (steel tubing, lumber, or your preferred option) – to reinforce the opening
Fasteners or welder – bolts, screws, or a welder depending on your frame choice
Drill & bits / impact driver – for securing the tracks and headerLevel & square – to ensure proper alignment of the frame and door
Caulk or flashing – for sealing gaps around the frame and keeping out water
Safety gear (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection) – for safe cutting and installation
Helpers or lifting equipment – roll up doors are heavy and may require two people or mechanical assistance

    1. Mark & Cut the Opening

Measure and mark the desired door location on the container wall.

Ensure the opening is slightly larger than the roll-up door’s clear dimensions to allow room for framing.

Use a grinder, torch, or plasma cutter to cut out the steel wall panel carefully.

    2. Build & Install the Frame

Construct a frame from steel tubing or structural lumber to reinforce the cut opening.

The frame should be square, level, and securely welded or bolted to the container wall.

Double-check that the finished opening matches the door manufacturer’s recommended rough opening size.

    3. Position & Secure the Roll-Up Door

With assistance (roll-up doors are heavy), lift the door unit into place inside the framed opening.

Align the door’s guide tracks with the frame so that the curtain rolls smoothly.

Fasten the tracks and header securely to the frame using bolts, screws, or welds depending on your frame material.

4. Test & Finish

Roll the door up and down several times to ensure smooth movement.

Adjust the tracks or frame as needed if the door binds or doesn’t seat properly.

Seal around the frame with caulk or flashing to reduce water and dust intrusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a container roll-up door used for?

A roll-up door replaces or supplements the standard cargo doors to make getting in and out of your container far easier. Instead of swinging the heavy original doors open, the curtain rolls up overhead, which is ideal for self-storage, workshops, and any container you access often. It is a popular addition for container fabrication projects where everyday accessibility matters.

What is the door made of?

The door curtain is a 26 gauge corrugated panel manufactured from full-hard galvanized grade 80 steel. The galvanized steel resists rust and weather, and the corrugated profile keeps the curtain rigid while staying light and easy to roll up and down by hand.

What sizes are available, and how do I pick the right one?

This roll-up door comes in various sizes to suit different container openings and projects, which you can select from the options on this page. Measure the opening where the door will be installed before ordering, and choose the size that matches so the door fits the framed opening correctly.

Does installing a roll-up door require modifying the container?

Yes. A roll-up door is added to the container, which means an opening is framed for it to mount into, so this is more involved than a bolt-on accessory and is typically done as part of a fabrication or build-out. Plan for that installation work, or have it fitted by someone equipped to frame and mount the door.
