How to use

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Mark and Cut the Opening

  1. Select the placement for your man door on the shipping container panel.
  2. Use a measuring tape and a marker to outline the exact dimensions of the cutout. Note: Mark the lines so the cutout will be slightly larger than the outer dimensions of the door frame to allow for a comfortable fit.
  3. Equipping proper face and body protection, use an angle grinder with a cutting disc, a plasma cutter, or a torch to carefully cut along your marked lines through the corrugated steel wall. Clear away the cut panel.

Step 2: Position the Pre-Framed Door

  1. Clean and deburr the cut edges of the container wall to remove any sharp slag or loose metal.
  2. With the assistance of a helper or lifting equipment, lift the heavy, pre-framed man door assembly and set it directly into the cutout opening.
  3. Use a level and a framing square to verify that the door frame sits completely plumb, level, square, and flush with the container wall. Use temporary shims if necessary to lock it into alignment.

Step 3: Weld the Frame in Place

  1. Set up your MIG or stick welder and put on your welding mask and protective safety gear.
  2. Place small tack welds on the four corners of the frame to lock it into its square position, then double-check the level.
  3. CRITICAL STEP: Run a continuous finish weld along the entire exterior perimeter where the door frame meets the corrugated container skin. This heavy-duty mechanical bond provides ultimate structural security and creates a strong, structural seal that prevents water from ever leaking inside.

Step 4: Test, Seal, and Finish

  1. Open and close the door multiple times to confirm that the latch operates smoothly and the frame doesn't bind.
  2. Apply a heavy bead of exterior-grade silicone caulk or weather flashing around any remaining small microscopic gaps or seams to protect against wind, driving rain, and dust.
  3. Install your choice of heavy-duty locks, handles, or security hardware into the designated door slots.

Step 5: Prime and Paint the Steel

  1. Because the pre-framed door assembly arrives unpainted from the factory, clean the welded steel frame with a wire brush to remove welding scale.
  2. Apply a coat of rust-resistant metal primer over the frame and raw welds.
  3. Follow up with a high-quality, exterior-grade paint to seamlessly match the color scheme of your custom container conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes in the man door kit?

The kit includes the steel door itself along with the frame so you get a complete walk-through door assembly rather than just a slab. The steel construction makes it secure, giving your container a proper personnel door you can use every day.

Why add a man door to a shipping container?

It gives you easy everyday access without having to open the heavy main cargo doors each time. A man door is ideal for containers used as workshops, offices, storage you visit often, or any setup where swinging the full cargo doors open is impractical. It also improves security and weather sealing compared to leaving the cargo doors as your only way in.

Does installing a man door require cutting the container?

Yes. Adding a man door means cutting an opening in the container wall for the frame to mount into. It is more involved than a bolt-on accessory, so plan for that cutting and welding or fastening work, or have it fitted by someone equipped to do it if you would rather not cut the container yourself.
